Delegate Tony McConkey from Dist.33A

Delegate McConkey updated the group on the results of the legislature activity which just ended. The legislature pasted around 730 Bills during this session. He indicated there were still around 20 Bills that did not finish do to the lack of time. Delegate McConkey reviewed many of the key Bills that were in the news and answered questions from the membership. He indicated that the cost of Maryland government increased 8% last year and will increase 6% this year which is greater than inflation.

Severna Park High School Principal - Jason Dykstra

Principal Dykstra gave an inspiring “state of affairs” of the Severna Park High School. He listed numerous statistics that places Severna Park High in the top tier in the State and Country in spite of the physical condition of the school. We should all be proud of the achievements of the High School and provide the Principal and staff with our support. One of the current goals of the school is to “make a great school extraordinary”. Principal Dykstra discussed some of the SPHS building facilities problems that require renovation, such as faulty heating & air conditioning system difficult to maintain, old faulty plumbing, non repairable boarded-up windows, ceiling tiles missing & non repairable, storage rooms turned into teaching & office spaces, poorly designed hallway intersections, etc. Principal Dykstra is a very inspiring, knowledgeable, student supporting and dynamic leader of our High School.  After answering many questions from the members he complimented the community for its support of the High School but has asked that we also support the effort to replace the 50 year old building by keeping the feasibility study on track for the 2010/2011 school year.

Environmental Committee:  The Magothy River Assoc. announce that they will be planting two million oysters this year as part of a grant from the Maryland DNR. Also, the County Police Dept will sponsor their annual “Shred a Rama” on May 17th from 9-1. When we have the correct locations we will inform the membership. Each person will be allowed 4 file cabinet size boxes to be shredded while they are there.

They County mosquito spraying will commence soon.  For mosquito control information, go to www.mda.state.md.us or call 410-841-5870.

Police Relations: Several of the officers will be presented with awards this month. Wes Adams will begin attending Police meetings representing GSPC.

Public Works:  Dan Natif stated that Benfield Blvd. will be repaved from Jumpers Hole Rd. going west to smooth out the surface after the sewer replacement project completed. West Benfield will be delayed until after the planned new sewer project completes.

Centennial/ASPIRE:  Earl Schaffer and Maureen discussed the production of “Amelia’s Journey” with music by Londontowne Symphony orchestra. The date is June 21, 2008 at the Severna Park High School auditorium. Proceeds will benefit the Severna Park Mural project.
